I saw this really cool leather jacket months ago. I went to buy it and it said
it would not be available to November. November comes and I order the jacket. I
never receive but my card is charged. I call and they tell me the order was
canceled because they no longer carry the jacket. I still see it on the
website with a different item number. I call to ask if they really have this
time and they say yes. I order it again. I called this morning to make sure it
was shipping. They tell me it shipped today. So I go on the website to get a
tracking number and guess what it is canceled. I call and they tell me they no
longer have the item. WTF is this. I never ordered from them before. Is this
common with them?

I have not ordered from them in quite a while, but I never had any problem with
this.

I stopped ordering from them a few years ago because I everything I ordered
was always on
backorder, or never restocked.
I found their quality to be less than great as well, but your mileage may
vary.

Ditto. Plus the quality of goods is not so good (the clothing looks much
better in the catalog than IRL.

This is definitely true! Quality is shoddy and that probably explains the
really low prices. Last year, I was helping with the Cherry Blossom
Festival, and we needed to get all of the contestants matching dresses.
Because their prices were so reasonable (and they supposedly had plenty of
small sizes in stock), we ordered from the Chadwick's website. Aside from
the fact that the order was SO LATE that the girls almost ended not getting
the dresses in time for their public appearances, the sizing was
inconsistent and required hours of alteration.

This year, we ordered custom dresses from a local designer. :)

Sorry to hear about that; that is certainly frustrating.

I've found Chadwick's customer service to be fine, usually. But I do
know that you have to really move fast to get items before they are
back ordered (which can take months,) or sell out. Many times you can
find identical or similar equivalents on the online site. Seems you
have already tried that, though.

Chadwick's is awful about keeping stuff in stock. I get their catalogs all
the time and see things I want, but 99% of the time, the stuff is on
backorder so I don't bother. I just saw a belt I *had* to have, and the
website said it is on backorder until January!! I'd never count on getting
something from there as a gift unless you order it at least six months in
advance (and I'm not joking ... as someone else said, they regularly cancel
backordered orders). The also have a tendency to extend backorders (ie, the
first notice says it'll be backordered til January ... then you'll get one
that says it's backordered til February, etc.). Annoying, annoying,
annoying.

The quality, as someone else said, tends to be lacking, but since their
stuff tends toward the trendy, it's usually not stuff you'll want forever
anyway.

Well it's been years since I ordered from Chadwick's, but nothing like
that ever happened when I did. Perhaps they've gone way downhill though.
However, I had an almost-identical experience to the one you describe
with the Lew Magram catalog. What was so frustrating was the waiting and
the run-around! I could have bought something similar at the mall, but I
was waiting and waiting endlessly for the one I'd ordered to show up. I
just send Lew Magram catalogs directly into the round file as soon as
they come in these days.
