Discussion:
Colleen Corby (Fashion Model: 1964 - 1972)

Hi!

I'm a real newbie here, but I'd like to ask a question on a post that appeared many years ago in this newsgroup. The thrust of the post was that Colleen Corby appeared on Oprah Winfrey circa 1996 and looked wonderful.

Would anyone be aware of this interview or Colleen Corby? I lost track of her in 1981.

I contacted Ford Model Management a few minutes ago, but the people that I knew there no longer work there, so my pull may be limited (even though I supplied them with Colleen's last known NYC address). Even "Dragon Lady" herself is no longer involved in the business.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

I remember seeing her on the now defunct Vicki Lawrence Show in the 90's. She
did not look wonderful - I wouldn't have known that she was Colleen.

Oh, that is slightly upsetting to hear. I wonder why that poster stated
that she looked wonderful, although wonderful is a relative term for one's
age (Colleen would be 56 years old now) ... She'd always look beautiful to
me, no matter what the situation. Are you talking about age or skin may I
ask?

If Colleen was making the daytime talk show circuit in the mid-90's,
something must have been up, unless they were just discussing retro fashion
on every show.

Thank you for responding. :-)

Yes, Colleen was very short for a model by today's standards, but still she
was 5' 8" in her stocking feet. Colleen's face was always very round, not
too many people realized that from her magazine photos. Her round face kind
of took her out of the running for supermodel status, even though the term
supermodel was just coming into being.

I'm not surprised that she looked middle aged. Depending on the actual year
and air date of the shows, she would have been about 48 years old at that
time.

Do you happen to remember what the discussion was about? Fashion or
personal? In 1981, Colleen was not married.

She was surprisingly short in stature for a model and she looked like a
middle-aged woman with brown hair in a cap cut. She was not overweight,
but
not thin either.

It was fashion. Vicki Lawrence's husband is a make-up artist and she had a lot
of beauty subjects on her show. She also had a lot of "reunion" themes, i.e.
legendary stars of the forties, fifties. If memory serves me right, this was
legendary models - I believe Sunny Griffin was also on the show.

Thanks, you have a good memory then. I attached 2 advertisements from 1965
to a post that I sent, but it didn't get through one was for Ellen Tracy and
the other was for Laura May. I guess that this newsgroup doesn't allow
photo attachments.

I have written to Oprah online to see if I can get a copy of that tape, but
these appearances may be too long ago for a videotaped copy to be created.

Oh wow! That's a name I haven't heard of in YEARS. I remember her very
distinctly from my teens, from 17, Ingenue, various catalog shoots, and
such! I thought she was soooooo cool and I wanted sooooo much to look
like her, I did my hair as close to hers as I could, but my face was a
bit longer ... and I was a bit shorter, and a bit heavier. :)

I think I remember her in catalogs as late as 1974-1975 or so. I thought
she dropped off the face of the earth, or at least retired from the biz.
Back in 1969 or so, I would have definitely considered her to be a
supermodel, or else just under that status. You saw her everywhere.

Curiosity just got the best of me. I did some web searches, and I'm
very surprised there are no fan sites or galleries or anything. Alta
Vista gives only one reference to her, an article on Bulemia which
just mentions her in one sentence. Doing Google gives some of that
and some porn sites, which I didn't even bother clicking, I'm not
*that* curious.

Oh well, so it goes. :)

I happen to like OE to K because it's constantly updated and interfaced with
Windows and it basically matches the same design and functions of Outlook in
Office Pro. However, the fact remains that this thread wasn't cancelled and
a pop-up stated that it might take several hours, not several months. LOL.

I know that Eudora made an excellent product about 8 years ago, but I don't

I am ready to set up a site for Colleen, but will not publish it without
express permission. I too was very surprised that there has been
absolutely
no mention of her on the Internet and I've been online since 1982 (300
baud - CompuServe)
Colleen professionally modeled just prior to the supermodel craze which
began with Cheryl Tiegs in 1970. Pay rates for Colleen were $150 an hour
($300 swimsuit rate), today that is meaningless in the modeling industry
where the rates have zoomed to a cap of about $30,000 an hour for Gisele
and
Daniela (who still continues to work 5 years after having a child).
Colleen did drop off the face of the Earth, but then that's the way she
wanted it. You can find plenty of Colleen on E-Bay, under "Seventeen"
magazine and sometimes "Teen". I have asked if a Colleen Corby cover
raises
the final price of an auction and I was told "no" by several bidders. The
bidders are looking for nostalgia advertising and Seventeen was HUGE in
those days. When Triangle Publications sold it to Prime Media it all went
down hill. The high school/college magazine became a magazine for
12-year-olds.
The following link is for illustration purposes only and may not exist
after

Elliot,

This photo takes me back. In fact, I remember it vividly because my mother was
able to find a gold-toned buckle just like the one on her silver dress, and she
made an identical dress for my sister in a deep, rich purple.

I was also taken with the idea of weaving ribbons through our hair!

Doesn't that take you back Cary? That gold-toned buckle must have been a
treasure. I have actually remembered that silver dress photo on and off
throughout the years; that's a Jonathan Logan dress for $32.00, today it
would probably go for $200.00. I must admit that I remember every single
cover as if it were yesterday. But I have also forgotten a lot with respect
to the internal advertising and photos: ads for Gay Gibson, Bobbi Brooks,
Cotton, Meds (made of rayon fibers instead of cotton? - LOL), Etc.

And I guess that I had forgotten how many pages Terry Reno and Lucy Angle
were on.

The weaving of ribbons in hair became really big around that time and the
use of "falls", hair extensions.

Reading these magazines now is really "a trip". Articles written by Senator
McCarthy, and articles about the draft and arch-enemy Richard Nixon. LOL.

Most of these magazines are in good to excellent condition, but the ones
that came in the mail yesterday have an odor (kept in a garage or a cellar).
I've got them airing out while I'm at work, but I may have to place them in
a box with baking soda and see if that absorbs the musty smell.

Regards,

Elliot

I always took it to mean the age 17, because the articles are all geared
towards "experimentation", finding the right college, going away to college,
football games, Etc. The age seventeen denotes a Junior or Senior in High
School, and the fashions were definitely not for 14-year-olds in the 1960's
and 1970's.

I've seen Seventeen today and it's totally different, geared towards
pre-puberty to just becoming puberty age, and the fashions are 12 - 14 year
oldish.

I tend to agree K. I thought of that myself. Age brings a totally
different perspective, but by the same token the visual expanse does too.
Even though photography has come a long way, from 1/500th of a second to
1/20000th of a second, the sheer size of the old format just brought
everything to life. It was almost as if you were "on location" while
viewing the 13"x10.5" format. The people and fashions became real too, just
in the same manner as when you watch a large screen TV (above 36") today.

Moulin Rouge is one of those films that is so entertaining that you can

What's up with that? :-(

Colleen Corby is Colleen's real name. It's not a stage name. We have been
personal friends on and off for 38 years and I found her again a few weeks
ago. Her father's name is Thomas. :-) I was asked to cancel this thread,
but found out that if I cancel my part of the thread that it doesn't cancel
anyone else's part of the thread. :-( LOL.

I have set up a shell fan site for her, but it is up to her to tell me
whether or not she wants it. She's running cold on it at the moment so I am
not pushing the idea. I was not eluding to the legality. Thanks. :-)

El
I think I lost the message in this thread about whoever was going to
start the Colleen Corby site, but anyway ...
IANAL, but from what I remember from a Media Law class many years ago,
you probably don't need permission from anybody to start a fan site of
somebody who was indeed a "celebrity", and I'm sure being a teen mag
cover model would qualify her as such. :)
I also got the impression that "Colleen Corby" was a stage or
professional name, and not her real life name.
You see fan sites for just about anybody who was anything back in the
60's and 70's. The fact that Colleen has essentially zero footprint
on the Web makes me more curious as to what became of her.
My hunch is, and that's what this is, only a hunch, is that she got
tired of the rat-race of the model biz and dropped out of modeling
and retired her professional name. I'm sure she did collect quite a
nest egg, and it's my impression she would not be the type to blow
it all or become a total burnout like many almost-models.
LOL -- she could have very well moved to Peoria, got married, lived in
anonymity in a tract home with a white picket fence with 2.27 children
and .436 dogs, and by now, possibly 2.89 grandchildren. :)
Maybe she found religion. :)
I sure don't know.
Oh well, so it goes. :)

here saw her as a role model back then and we would sure like to see
some of her works again, and we would like to know what happened to her.

Out of curiosity, what has she been doing, occupation wise, for the last
20 years or so?

I'm afraid that Colleen (and others) were cast aside for newer models (pun
intended), so part of her disappearance (as well as other disappearances)
were forced. Then as age sets in, well you know you tend to drop out. She
was always a very private, aloof, and even arrogant person at times and
remains so today, but perhaps that is the secret of her charm.

She is very much aware that she had a fan base but somehow is unwilling to
believe that any such fan base exists now - or that it matters. As a
matter of fact she is adamant that I remove this entire thread, but I find
that there is only a way to remove my portions of the thread, not anyone's
responses. I am not looking forward to conveying that information to her.
LOL.

I was able to locate her, very easily actually about 2 weeks ago through an
old mutual friend, and saw her last weekend. She always be someone special
to me, and perhaps on my death bed, she might be one of the last thoughts
that I have.

You may know that her business failed along time ago. As her career ended
she wanted to travel and have her own Shoppe's, which included plans for her
sister Molly too. She remained single past the age of 34. Other than that,
I am not willing to go into other personal aspects of her life because it
would not be appropriate for me to do so unless she wants a fan website.

My original post in here was just to find out what the Oprah Winfrey program
was about in 1996 because I had missed it. I was on a 6-week search for her
when I posted, and on more than one occasion I was sure that I found her,
only to find out that I had not. Since her father was a military man, my
search even led me to badger some poor unsuspecting woman in our Armed
Forces and several people in London. LOL. She took it pretty well and
thought that she had been in fact named after Colleen ... right down to
Colleen's middle initial.

I will say something to her on Monday when I speak to her. My children are
here this weekend and I shy away from having "private" conversations when
they are around because they sneak around and listen to every word that I
say to outsiders. LOL. Spy Kids! :-)

Well, 'nuff said.

In that case then you might consider shutting up about the details of her

why on earth would you think it was appropriate for you to blather on about her
life and its particulars in greater detail?

Stop stalking her and get a life already.

No, I didn't take it like that K. But she doesn't know me at all and to
make up a stalking charge out of nowhere was just irrational. Only Colleen
can judge me on that point, certainly not a total stranger, and believe me
if Colleen thought that she would have absolutely no problem in making that
clear to me whatsoever! LOL.

As far as any information that I mentioned one comment referred to 1972
(public knowledge) and the other was a reference to 1981. I certainly did
not divulge any information pertaining to the last 21 years, so that too was
a bizarre accusation/comment.

She did defend Colleen as if she were a jealous lover though. I like that.
It stands in her favor. :-)

Well, if she was raped or stalked in the past then perhaps I can understand
and overlook her comment.

But if she hates all men then there is no excuse for the animosity.
Discrimination whether it's against women, men, and everyone else in between
is intolerable.

Perhaps she has had fantasies about men and these fantasies about being
sought after go unfulfilled. ;-> That would be the psychological take on
her responses then.

Colleen will always be my hottie, in ANY century. :-)

She hates all of us. She's bitter about life and I have no clue as to why
this is. Some people feel they've been dealt a low blow and blame others
they see as having more than them or knowing people they wish they knew.

Well said K. This is a public forum and if Julie (who doesn't know us at

liberty to air our viewpoints on the woman who judges unfairly. She might
be a very sick person and she might not, but when you 'assume' and unfairly
accuse those whom you do not know, then you make yourself fair game for
anything that follows.

As far as anything else, I was asked a question by Annie and responded,
without giving away any present-day details of the life of the person whom
we are discussing. The situations that I mentioned occurred 20 - 30 years
ago for God's sake. LOL.

I don't really think of myself as a "fan", but I did regard her as kind
of a style and role model way back when. Yes, I tried to get my hair to
look like hers, but my face is a bit longer and my features are not the
same as hers, so I could not pass as her stunt double. :) I'm sure I was
shorter (I'm about 5'6) than she was and yes, a few pounds heavier. I
seemed to oscillate around 118-120 back in my late teens. (I won't even
THINK of discussing weight now. :) I wasn't at all in bad shape, but
definitely not in the range qualifying for modeling. Besides, I had
other career aspirations, which seem to have worked out fine. :)

There were a lot of looks I tried, all of us did back then. When I saw
something I liked, I often tried it. Sometimes it worked, often it did
not.

same as hers, so I could not pass as her stunt double.
Sometimes it worked, often it did
not.

As a
matter of fact she is adamant that I remove this entire thread, but I find
that there is only a way to remove my portions of the thread, not anyone's
responses. I am not looking forward to conveying that information to her.
LOL.
You can tell her that a lot of us admired her, and not to seem like a
fuddy, but one thing I admired about her was that she was not one of
those models who was always mentioned being connected to the New York or
Hollywood party and drug scene.

You may know that her business failed along time ago. As her career ended
she wanted to travel and have her own Shoppe's, which included plans for her
sister Molly too.
Hmmmm... I don't remember anything about her starting a business. I'm
sorry the business did not work out. :( Of course there's a lot of the
1970's that seems like one big blurr to me. :)

I will say something to her on Monday when I speak to her. My children are
here this weekend and I shy away from having "private" conversations when
If she wants to be private, I'll respect that and let the thread die.
When the name came up, I remembered her very well from back then, and
wondered what happened to her.
I'm sure ... not if but when ... the people who write those "where are
they now" type columns may be looking for her too. :) Her face was very
well recognized back in the late 60's and early 70's.
Oh well, so it goes. (And so do I. :)

That's funny, most of the issues that I have say "Back to School" and show
all of the college fashions with campus photos too (with campus tips).
Perhaps you might want to pick an old one up and see if I'm right. Memory
gets blurry with time. I didn't remember the college and preppie fashions
either. :-)
i think seventeen wanted to give that college image, but i know by the time i
got to college, i was 17 and well past the magazine. i'd already gotten into
glamour and mademoiselle and started to become addicted to vogue.

Glamour is a spectacular magazine IMO. They were one of the first women's
magazines to expand their reading material towards women with professional
goals, investments, and health in the 1980's - even down to doing car
repairs!

However, I am totally clueless as to what Glamour was like in the 1960's and
1970's. Can you or anyone else enlighten me?

Thanks.
