Discussion:
Slingbacks and pantyhose???

I have a pair of wonderful black leather slingbacks (my "trophy" shoes) that
I've always worn with skirts or dresses in the summer and pants at other times.
I've never felt right wearing the shoes with panty hose because I thought it
was a fashion faux pas. But now with hose being so big again, is it still
against the fashion law? I want to wear a skirt to a party tonight, but don't
want to go bare-legged. Can I wear the slingbacks with sheer panty hose?
Black??
If they were closed shoes, I'd wear the panty hose, but since they are
partially open, I'm not sure at all.

All advice appreciated!
TIA,

IMHO open in the back is fine. Now if it was open-toed, I wouldn't go there.

Oh, shades of relief!!!
So, if I'm wearing a black skirt or dress, will black hose look better with the
black slingbacks, or should I stick to a sheer tone?

I'll be watching for answers since I just bought a black skirt to wear with
these shoes: http://tinyurl.com/w9uw (not slingbacks, but I'd think the
rule would hold for a mule). So, skin tone, or black? If black, subtle
pattern or just sheer? Top is solid red.

Personally I think black skirt, black hose, and then black shoes (with open
heel) is too much black, but that's just me. For example I'm wearing velvet
pants to an upcoming holiday party and I tried on my black slingbacks with
black hose and natural hose and the natural looked much better. IMHO, of
course!

I'd go for just sheer based on looks but I seriously doubt I could keep
heeled mules on my feet with any type of sock , hose or tights!

Your mules look so much like my slingbacks! My shoes are leather, but they had
that identical little tie on top (also made of leather ;-).

"Evie wrote",
<<Do not wear pantyhose with slingbacks. It does not work. Your feet will slip
in and out of the shoes.>>

I could see a bit of slipping with an open back mule, but when you have
slingbacks, the straps really hold your foot in (at least on my shoes) just
like a closed back shoe would.

So the consensus seems to be fairly split.

Anyone, anyone?

I have those exact same SW mules (and love them, btw) but I've never worn
any hose with them, not even a fishnet. HTH

I brought them shopping with me yesterday to try on clothes and the
saleslady said she had the same shoes also. I guess they are good to wear
with a lot of things.

Barelegged, huh? Do you wear them in the winter?

Very cute and versatile. Very sleek and yet feminine without being too
much of either, imo. I love SW's shoes.

I haven't worn those in the winter, no. The fabric isn't conducive to bad
weather up here. I bought them last spring at Nordies, I think, and so
far have been able to wear them in every season except winter and with a
variety of outfits from a suit to a pair of jeans. Hope you get as much
enjoyment out of yours. :)

I agree with the other posters here who have said that slingbacks with
hose is Ok for winter. IMO, mules scream summer or at least insanely
warm weather.

They may be wearable any given day in South Texas.

Personally I find shoes where the heels are visible are not suitable in
weather where a coat is unnecessary. There is something so wrong about
clogs mules or slingbacks with coats. Clogs are probably a little more
versatile of the three because they tend do get worn with opaque tights
or socks (I certainly do anyway), but they're still dreadfully casual
and coats are not a casual statement per se - sporty is their minimum.
In winter I tend to wear d'orsay shoes if I want to show off more foot
flesh, so my advice is ditch the shoes if you're wearing a coat and opt
for maryjane styled d'orsays.

Uh, yeah.

Slingbacks are perfectly acceptable footwear for cooler weather, and as long as
they have closed toes, it's appropriate to wear hoisery with them.

And I'd go with sheer black hose for a party.

Oops that should have been NECESSARY. (Thanks Julie! :-)

PS to the original poster, the reason being is that from behind it looks
as though you're wearing sandals, not shoes.

Do not wear pantyhose with slingbacks. It does not work. Your feet will slip
in and out of the shoes. It also does not look attractive together. Save the
slingbacks for spring/summer.

When I don't want a totally bare leg with open-toed slingbacks, I wear a
pair of fishnets. In some cases (with a pair of 40s style open-toed ankle
strap pumps, for example) I go to a pair of dancer's hose that are made
with the toes already cut out and they work great for me. If the
slingbacks are closed toe, yes, hose are fine to wear with them. There is
no 'rule' that says you can't. :)

If you (or others) have a problem with slingbacks fitting you so they
don't slip or slide when you wear them without hose, you might want to
have a look for the new hose that are out in stores with little grippers
on the soles. HTH

What about toeless pantyhose? I've worn these with slingbacks and mules
before and they worked out well. The fact that they were toeless also
helped me keep the mules on! Whether or not it's fashionably OK, I don't
know?
