Lord & Taylor and The May Compnay in Florida

I have a few questions about the Lord & Taylor operation in Florida. With
all the major publicity surrounding the closing of it's Florida stores - -
something made me ponder something about the Florida locations. I checked
their website, and they only mentioned 6 stores "to be divested". I always
thought that Lord & Taylor had about 10 or 12 stores in Florida not just the
6 that they announced (of which 2 or 3 are less than 5 years old). I
remember being in a store near Palm Beach that wasn't on the list. Perhaps
I'm mistaken, but I honestly believed that Lord & Taylor had a much bigger
presence in Florida when it was owned by Associated Dry Goods. Did the May
Company downsize Lord & Taylor discreetly? At what Florida locations
(present and past) has Lord & Taylor been located at? And have they been
closing Florida locations all along?

I also remember that years ago, both the May Company had an operation in
Florida (May-Cohens?) and so did Associated Dry Goods (Robinsons?). What
happened to these stores after the merger ?

Their 2002 annual report shows a total of 6 stores in Florida.

Alas, their 10-Ks doesn't detail their store count by state (unlike
some of their competitors...).

They did have lists of stores opening and closing but I didn't see
Florida in the sample I made. I did see where they acquired The Jones
Store (Kansas City and surrounding areas).

There's one in the International Mall in Tampa that opened about 3 years ago
and is slated to close, if it hasn't already. I walked through their once and
found the store depressing - not in it's layout or general ambience, but rather
the product selection.

I thought at one time that they had a much bigger presence in Florida -
especially on the Atlantic Coast side - more than just the 6 stores that are
to be divested.

Not Linda, but...

My opinion on International Mall is that it is a wonderful mall if you are
uber-rich. The Millennia mall in Orlando is better if you are well-off yet
also like looking at uber-rich stuff. :) It's basically the same stores,
except Millennia has bloomies and Macys, which I consider "real" stores,
i.e., you can actually afford to browse and shop there liberally. I'm not a
fan of L&T, and Nordies is great for shoes but not as much else (for me). I
was at International Plaza yesterday, and though it is worth visiting just
for the eye candy (Via Spiga store, Dior, etc etc) there isn't as much for
the average person to actually buy. JMHO. :) Check out the store directory
online and see what you think! It's definitely a gorgeous place.

Thanks Jennifer and Linda also. Now I think I need to visit both malls -
International and Millennia - obviously not to shop but to take a look. I
will try to schedule both next visit - after all, need to get prepared for
browsing, looking and shopping when I make my move. I did catch the Ocala Mall
last time I was at The Villages but I will need more venturesome venues.

Thanks again!

It really depends on what you're looking for. They have a Neiman's, Nordstrom,
and Dillards as anchors, and a lot of specialty stores like Yankee Candle,
L'Occitane, Tiffany's, and a lot of designer stores (can't remember which
because I pass them by). It's a nice mall just to browse around in, but very
expensive if you stray too far from the department stores. They have the mall
basics there too (Victoria's Secret et al). There's an outdoor area and some
nicer restaurants to eat in, so you're not stuck in a food court unless you
want to be. I find more I'm interested in at West Shore Plaza though, not too
far from International.

J.,

I remember in my area (Jacksonville) May Cohens became May Florida and then
Dillard's I believe. May Cohens had been around for years and was a very
nice store but then it didn't stay May Florida for very long before the name
changed again.

I don't have any details on the merger though.

I can't remember which was in the retail space first, Ivey's or Robinson's, but
that location is now a Dillard's.

Did Lord & Taylor sell some of it's locations to Mervyn's several
years ago? My friend from Florida told me that she thinks that
the L & T that I am thinking about became a Mervyns.

It's the other way around. Some former Mervyn's locations in Florida
went to May.

Mervyn's has no stores east of Louisiana:

On a side note, all Lord & Taylor locations in Florida are
closing...some faster than others. The one in Aventura was already
reducing to 50% off (everything, including cosmetics if they were
still on the shelves) about a month ago when the Boca Raton location
is still only 30% off this week.

Do you mean the one in the Palm Beach Mall off I-95 on Palm Beach
Lakes Blvd? That one closed down about 2 years ago.

They opened up a new one in the Wellington mall when the new mall
opened also about 2 years ago but sadly it's closing down as well
since all Lord & Taylor stores are closing in Florida. They are
currently having a liquidation sale to get rid of all of their
remaining inventory.

Yes, I believe that the one off on I-95 is the one that I was thinking about
in my original post on this subject.

Was it there for about 15 or so years? I remember it being very close to
the
interstate.
